How much should I charge as a brand new AI VA?

About to send my first outreach messages and I have no idea what to quote. Everyone on Upwork seems to charge either $8/hr or $60/hr with nothing in between. I've never done VA work before but I'm decent with ChatGPT and organized. What's a realistic starting number that won't scare people off but also isn't giving my time away?

I started at $18/hr and honestly could have gone a couple dollars higher. The $8/hr crowd is competing on price alone and you don't want those clients anyway, they tend to be the worst about scope creep.

Agree with $15-20 range for the first client or two. I did $15 for my first one just to get a review, then went to $25 for the next.

One thing nobody tells you - quote a project rate for small one-off tasks instead of hourly. Clients hate watching an hourly clock for a 45 minute job.
