The trial-task trick that got me hired twice

Instead of pitching a full retainer right away, I've started offering a small paid trial task first, usually 2-3 hours of work for a flat $40-50. Way easier for a stranger to say yes to than committing to a monthly retainer with someone they've never worked with. Both my current clients started this way.

Doing this now too, it's a much smaller ask and it lets the client see actual work quality before deciding on anything bigger.

How do you handle it when the trial goes well but they just... never follow up about a retainer? Happened to me twice.
