How do you find profitable products?

This is probably asked all the time, but I'm genuinely struggling with product research.
I've been using the free version of Jungle Scout's extension and I feel like every product I find either:
- Has too much competition
- Has too low margins
- Requires a huge upfront investment
What am I missing? How do you experienced sellers find products worth selling?
I'm not looking for anyone to give away their secrets, just some general guidance on the process. Is paid software essential?

Paid software definitely helps but isnt mandatory. The real secret is going deeper than page 1 results. Look at page 2-3 products with good reviews but poor listings - thats opportunity. Also, solve real problems. I find my best product ideas by reading 1-star reviews on existing products and asking what would fix this?

For arbitrage specifically: stop looking where everyone else looks. Skip the obvious clearance sections. Check garden centers in winter, seasonal aisles off-season, and always scan the random endcaps. My best finds are almost never where youd expect them.
