UPC codes and brand registry - confused!

Okay so I'm trying to list a product and Amazon is asking for a UPC code. But I've also read about Brand Registry and how you don't need UPCs if you have that?
Here's my confusion:
- Do I need to buy real GS1 UPCs or can I use cheaper ones?
- If I want to do private label, do I need a trademark first?
- How long does Brand Registry take to set up?
- Can I start selling while waiting for my trademark?
Sorry for all the questions, just trying to avoid any account issues down the road. I've heard horror stories about people getting suspended.

Always use GS1 UPCs. The cheap ones from eBay can cause major headaches down the line - Ive seen accounts get suspended over it. For Brand Registry, yes you need a trademark, but you can apply for one yourself through USPTO for about $250-350. Takes 8-12 months typically. You CAN sell while waiting, just use a GTIN exemption if needed.

Adding to what Sara said - once you have your trademark application filed (not approved, just filed), you can actually apply for Brand Registry under the IP Accelerator program. Its faster but costs more since you use an Amazon-approved law firm. Worth it if you want to move quickly.
