Been grinding out generic t-shirt designs, mostly funny quotes and dad-joke stuff. 40 listings live now and total sales across 3 months is $61. Starting to wonder if the niche is just too crowded or if I'm doing something else wrong.

Generic funny-quote shirts are about the most saturated category on Etsy. You're competing against thousands of nearly identical listings. Going narrower usually helps a lot more than making more of the same thing.

Same experience here. I was doing generic pet shirts, switched to a specific niche and my conversion rate noticeably improved even with fewer total listings.

Instead of 'dog mom shirt' think 'shirt specifically for people who foster senior dogs' - small audience, but they're the exact people searching for exactly that, not scrolling past a hundred generic dog shirts.
