Do I need an LLC or can I just start as a sole proprietor on Etsy?

Just getting started, wondering if I'm supposed to set up a business entity first or if people just start selling under their own name.

I just started as myself, Etsy payments just uses your SSN if you're not registered as a business. No LLC needed to get going.

I set one up after crossing a certain income level, mostly for the liability comfort once real money started coming in, not because Etsy required it.
